Why The Odyssey Is Nolan's Weakest Film (And Masters Of The Universe Wins Summer 2026)

Christopher Nolan doesn't make bad films. That's precisely what makes The Odyssey so disappointing — it isn't a failure of ambition, it's a failure of restraint.

I say this as someone who considers Inception the high-water mark of modern blockbuster filmmaking — a film that earned its complexity, its practical effects, its refusal to hold the audience's hand. The Odyssey wants that same credit, but it's chasing the signature rather than the substance. Somewhere between Interstellar's genuinely silly science and this latest outing, Nolan stopped trusting the story to carry the technique, and started using the technique to disguise a thinner story.

Take the "no CGI" philosophy, which has become something closer to a marketing line than a creative principle. Practical effects are a tool, not a virtue in themselves — and when they're deployed for the sake of being seen rather than serving the scene, you end up with technically impressive filmmaking that feels strangely hollow. Compare that to what Peter Jackson achieved with Lord of the Rings, where every practical choice served immersion rather than headlines. Or go back further, to Ray Harryhausen's work on Jason and the Argonauts and Clash of the Titans — stop-motion effects that, by any modern technical standard, should look primitive, and yet still carry more genuine wonder than half of this summer's tentpole releases.

Which brings me to Masters of the Universe — a film I didn't expect to be defending this vocally, and yet here we are. It doesn't carry Nolan's prestige or his marketing weight, but it understands something The Odyssey doesn't: fun is not a lesser goal than importance. It's currently sitting at number one on Prime Video, and unlike The Odyssey, it's a film I've genuinely gone back to rewatch — which, at the end of the day, is the only box office metric that actually matters to the person watching from their sofa.
