From Boy Band Reject to Gentleman: The Blueprint Behind My Transformation

Old med school photos reveal an awkward past. Here's the real blueprint Dr. Bobby Stryker used to reinvent himself as a gentleman.

I found photos this week that I genuinely hoped had been lost to time. Med school me, looking — and I say this with love — like I'd auditioned for a boy band and come in fourth.

I'm not sharing them for sympathy or nostalgia. I'm sharing them because the story of what happened between then and now is, I think, the most useful thing I've ever put on camera — and it has nothing to do with money, luck, or good genetics.

In school, I was solidly middle of the pack. Not unpopular, not popular — just there. But something shifted when I got to university. New environment, new people, nobody carrying an old idea of who I was. So I built one. I borrowed from my father, the most genuinely gentlemanly man I've ever known, and from a handful of characters I'd admired in movies and television, and I simply decided to commit to that version of myself before I'd fully grown into him.

Here's the part that actually matters: it worked because the people around me had no prior version to compare it against. There was nothing to contradict. And once enough people around you accept a version of you as real, it stops being a performance — it becomes who you are.

That foundation carried through everything that followed. As a new GP in 2009, a trainee told me plainly that being good wasn't enough — I needed to look the part to be taken seriously among my peers. So I started wearing suits, and the rest followed from there. When I arrived in Singapore in 2010, people assumed within weeks that I was running the polyclinic, purely off how I carried myself.

None of this was about being born cool. It was a blueprint — built deliberately, piece by piece, and then lived into until it was simply true.

I walk through the full story, photos included, in the new video — watch it here:
