Am I Famous Enough? Chopard, Mediacorp and a Very Good Watch

Chopard, Mediacorp and CNA have all come calling. Dr Bobby Stryker on the Happy Diamonds Heritage launch and whether he's famous enough.

Let me lay out the evidence and you can tell me whether I'm famous enough.

Exhibit A: I recently hosted an event for Mediacorp. Exhibit B: Mediacorp chose our clinic as a filming location for one of their dramas, which is a strange and wonderful thing to watch happen to the place where you normally treat people. Exhibit C: CNA interviewed me. Exhibit D, and the one I'm still smiling about: Chopard invited me to the launch of the Happy Diamonds Heritage (50th Anniversary Re-Edition) here in Singapore.

I put all of it into a video, partly as a lifestyle diary and partly as a case I'm presenting to you, the jury. You can watch it here:

This post is for the people who want to linger on the watch.

Fifty years ago, in 1976, Chopard introduced Happy Diamonds, a watch in which loose diamonds move freely behind the crystal instead of sitting fixed on the dial. It was playful, glamorous and slightly outrageous, which is exactly why it has lasted. For the 50th anniversary, Chopard has brought back the original as a faithful re-edition rather than a reinterpretation. The cushion-shaped case is in 18k ethical yellow gold. The dial is a deep black onyx, and the diamonds move between two sapphire crystals with every turn of the wrist.

It comes in two sizes. The 34mm is hand-wound and carries 21 diamonds totalling 1.05 carats, and the 24mm is quartz with nine diamonds. The 34mm lists at EUR 46,000, so Singapore pricing will differ, and Chopard's own site is the place to check. I'd call it a watch that suits a man or a woman, and the contrast of black onyx and yellow gold feels as if it belongs under evening light.

Being in the room was the real treat. A launch like this is as much theatre as retail. Everyone dressed well, the watches were displayed like jewels on velvet, and the diamonds caught the light every time someone lifted one. You get to see the room in the video, and I make sure you see the watch properly.

So, am I famous enough? I'll be honest: fame is a funny thing. A few years ago it would have sounded absurd that a GP would be asked to host a Mediacorp event, be interviewed by CNA, and attend a Chopard launch in the same stretch of time. If you didn't know who I was before today, I understand. If you did, thank you. Watch the video, then tell me in the comments which side you're on.
