Braun Series 9 Electric Shaver Unboxing & Review!
Anyone that knows me will know I’m all about tradition and style, wearing bespoke suits, appreciating fountain pens (stay tuned for my fountain pen 101 guide), mechanical time pieces and the occasional cigar but there’s one thing that no matter how hard I try, I just can’t convince myself to enjoy.
I am once again talking about shaving folks and specifically, wet shaving.
In April I wrote about how I returned to using a traditional wet shaver and no matter how cool it might look on TikTok videos, I’ve once again arrived at the conclusion that they're simply not as good as people make them out to be.
Yep, you’ve guessed it, I’ve gone back to electric shaving and recently picked up a Braun Series 9, specifically the 9385cc in graphite and it’s pretty awesome.
This is absolutely not sponsored, just my genuine two cents.
I first switched to electric shaving all the way back in 2004 when I picked up a Braun Activator 8595.
After the usual wean in period where it takes a few weeks for your skin to adapt, I really enjoyed it and was happy to wave goodbye to shaving knicks, cuts and other near fatal injuries.
The shaver came with a cleaning and charging dock, which despite being super noisy, did a good job.
After moving to Singapore, I thought I’d treat myself to a Braun Series 7, not because the Braun Activator had died or anything, I just figured it would be a nice treat.
Alas after about 8 years or so it kind of died!
The beard trimmer fell off and then the battery died completely while the paint, trim and finish had also started to peel off.
It was around this time that I guess I must’ve lost my marbles or something because I ventured back into the world of wet shaving and what a disaster that has been!
Yes, the whole lathering process can be therapeutic but a split second of complacency is all you need to cause your life to flash before your eyes.
Fine, I’m exaggerating but you know what I mean.
Now everyone says, you should wet shave with the grain, so this is exactly what I did and I never managed to get a super clean, close shave! I’m sure if I went against the grain that might have been possible but all the so-called wet shave aficionados always advise against it and so I appeared to have a constant 5 o'clock shadow even immediately after shaving!
As some of you know, I talk about fitness and health on YouTube and yes, I know the lighting is not identical in these pictures, but it is clearly visible that I had a 5 o'clock shadow, especially around the mouth area, and this was pretty much right after wet shaving!
In this second picture my skin feels silky smooth and my face is visibly shiny and clear! The permanent 5 o'clock shadow is finally gone thanks to the much closer shave offered by the Braun Series 9.
The Braun electric shavers all essentially share the same DNA, they all come with the clean and charge dock which hasn’t evolved a great deal since my first shaver in 2004 and if anything, the Series 9 dock is incredibly flimsy so who knows how long it will last.
The whole set, however, does look extremely cool on the bathroom countertop.
As for the shave itself, this is the best shave I’ve ever had and switching back to electric is akin to the enjoyment of driving automatic after learning manual.
The Series 9 makes shaving easy, quick, comfortable and almost effortless! The shaver smoothly glides over the skin and there's, so far, no hint of razor burn or any other unwanted drawbacks.
This is as good as shaving gets and simply put, I’ll never go back to wet shaving!
