Singapore vs London Part 2: Why Some Singaporeans Leave… and Never Come Back

I’ve spent time in both Singapore and London, and I’ve met a lot of Singaporeans who made the leap and never looked back. At first glance, it’s easy to chalk it up to higher salaries, lower stress, or a change of scenery. But the reality is much more… complicated.
Here’s what I’ve noticed:
1. Freedom That Feels Illegal
One of the biggest shocks I’ve seen for Singaporeans abroad is the sheer freedom, freedom that often borders on the things you could never do at home. Some of it would be flat-out illegal in Singapore, from nightlife extremes to recreational drugs. It’s not about being reckless; it’s about finally stepping into a space where curiosity isn’t immediately punished.
That thrill, doing something you couldn’t do in Singapore I guess is literally too addictive for some. And once you’ve tasted it, going back isn’t easy.
2. Identity vs Status
Back home, Singapore often defines success externally: your job, your condo, your car, even your watch. In London, status is quieter, more nuanced. People ask who you are, not what you do.
This is subtle, but it’s transformative. Suddenly, your identity isn’t tied to a checklist. You can experiment, fail, and reinvent yourself without judgment.
3. Wealth vs Lifestyle
Singapore builds wealth; London builds experiences. In Singapore, money buys comfort. In London, money often buys… freedom—to explore, to fail, to grow in unpredictable ways. That unpredictability is intoxicating for those who are curious, and for some, it’s worth more than financial security.
4. Ambition vs Creativity
Singapore rewards precision, strategy, and playing the game correctly. London rewards boldness, reinvention, and sometimes breaking the rules. For people craving a creative spark, a chance to “try something different,” London can feel like a second life.
5. The Hidden Trade-Off
Leaving Singapore isn’t about escaping the city-state. It’s about choosing between certainty and possibility. Some Singaporeans return, humbled and inspired. Others… never come back.
Because once you’ve lived somewhere that lets you be someone else, even just for a while, going back can feel like putting yourself in a cage.
