The Gentleman's Cigar Masterclass — Part 1: The Mystique, the Icons & the Humidor

It started in a cold Yorkshire drawer in the 1980s.

Five-year-old me, bored and restless on a rainy British afternoon, prising open a stuck mahogany cabinet in search of a treasure map. What I found instead were a handful of curious brown sticks wrapped in cellophane — my father's old cigars, remnants of a bachelor life I never knew. My mother shut that down immediately. My fascination, however, never quite went away.

Then came the 80s and 90s. Bond, Hannibal Smith, Arnie, Stallone, Wolverine, Clint Eastwood. An entire golden era of screen icons who reached for a cigar at their finest, coolest, most commanding moment. The cigar wasn't just a prop. It was a statement. A visual shorthand for class, control, and confidence that required no subtitles.

I'm a doctor now. Which means I've spent years telling people what's bad for them.

Including cigars.

The irony, as they say, is not lost on me.

Welcome to Part 1 of The Gentleman's Cigar Masterclass.

This is a three-part video series on Stryke of Midnight — and this first episode is where every great cigar journey should begin: the mystique, the history, the Hollywood icons who made it iconic, and the foundational knowledge every beginner needs before they buy their first stick.

In Part 1, we cover:

— Why the cigar became the defining symbol of action heroes and screen gentlemen for an entire generation

— The honest doctor's take on cigars vs cigarettes and what the real differences actually are

— What a humidor is, why it matters more than the cigar itself, and how to start yours

— How to store your cigars properly from day one

The Humidor Question

Most beginner guides skip straight to "which cigar should I buy first?" That is the wrong question. The right question is: where are you going to keep it?

A cigar improperly stored is a cigar slowly dying. Temperature, humidity, airflow — these aren't luxury concerns, they're basic requirements. A humidor isn't a fancy box for show. It's the foundation of any serious collection, at any budget.

We go through all of it in the video. Simply, clearly, with zero gatekeeping.

What's Coming Next

Part 2 of The Gentleman's Cigar Masterclass features an unboxing of an ST Dupont Limited Edition Trinidad lighter — one of the most beautiful cigar accessories you will ever see. That one drops very soon.

And in Part 3, we go inside a cigar lounge. The full anatomy of a cigar, explained properly. Cigar lounge etiquette — what to do, what absolutely not to do, and how to walk in as a gentleman from your very first visit.

Subscribe to the Stryke of Midnight YouTube channel so you don't miss either.

Stay classy, friends. Welcome to the upper ranks of action heroes and gentlemen.
