The Moment of Truth
You've read about cigars. You've learned about humidors. You may have even watched a doctor unbox one of the most beautiful lighters ever made.
Now it's time to actually walk into a cigar lounge.
And that — for most people — is where the anxiety kicks in.
What do I order? How do I cut it without making a fool of myself? When do I tap the ash? Can I put it out halfway through? What are the unwritten rules that everyone else seems to already know?
This is exactly what Part 3 of The Gentleman's Cigar Masterclass was made for.
Dr. Bobby Stryker. A tuxedo. Singapore's finest cigar lounge. And everything you need to walk in like you've been doing this for years.
Inside Maduro Cigar & Whisky Bar, Sentosa
There are cigar lounges, and then there is Maduro.
Nestled on the island of Sentosa, Maduro Cigar & Whisky Bar is in a league of its own in Singapore's cigar scene. Dark leather seating, exceptional whisky selection, and the kind of atmosphere that makes you want to slow everything down and simply be present. It is, in every sense, a gentleman's room.
It's also the perfect classroom.
The Anatomy of a Cigar
Before you can appreciate a cigar, you need to understand what you're holding. In the video we break down every component — the cap, the head, the body, the foot — and why each part matters for the experience you're about to have. This is the foundation that makes everything else make sense.
The Cut
This is where most beginners go wrong. Cut too little and the draw is too tight. Cut too much and the wrapper begins to unravel. In the video we go through the right tools, the right technique, and the single most common mistake that even experienced smokers make.
Toasting the Foot
Most guides skip this step entirely. They shouldn't. Toasting the foot — gently warming the tobacco at the open end of the cigar before your first draw — is what separates a proper light from an uneven burn that will frustrate you for the next hour. We demonstrate the right technique and explain exactly why it matters.
The Ash
Do not tap your cigar like a cigarette.
This is perhaps the single most important piece of cigar lounge etiquette, and it's the one most people get wrong first. A well-constructed cigar builds its ash as structural support for the burn — tapping it prematurely disrupts the whole process. In the video we show you exactly when and how to gently roll the ash into the tray, and how to read your cigar's ash for clues about its construction quality.
Drink Pairings
A cigar without the right drink is like a watch without the right strap — functional, but missing something. We go through the classic pairings and the logic behind them, from single malt Scotch and bourbon to rum, cognac, and even the unexpected options that work beautifully for lighter cigars.
How to Put Out a Cigar
Unlike a cigarette, you do not crush out a cigar. Simply rest it in the ashtray and allow it to extinguish naturally — forcing it out bruises the tobacco and releases an unpleasant aroma. We also address the question everyone wants to ask but rarely does: can you save a half-smoked cigar for later? The honest answer is yes, but we would not recommend and I explain why.
The Unwritten Rules
Every gentleman's space has rules that nobody writes down but everyone is expected to know. The cigar lounge is no different. In the video we cover the full etiquette guide — from how to ask for a recommendation without looking clueless, to the simple gestures that signal you belong in the room.
